The European region has the highest levels of alcohol consumption in the world, as a result, the continent also has the highest proportion of total ill health and premature death directly linked to alcohol.
Alcohol consumption is a a major contributor to the increasing burden of digestive diseases and known risk factor for digestive cancers, including oesophageal, liver, pancreatic, colorectal and gastric cancer.
Reducing alcohol harms
Our member society the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) published a policy statement with evidence-based policy recommendations to reduce alcohol consumption in the general population.
