One of the significant and desirable steps in my medical career became the UEG Clinical Visiting Fellowship. I was very happy when I received a letter from UEG confirming that my candidacy for the Clinical Visiting Fellowship program had been accepted. This program gave me the opportunity to complete a clinical fellowship in one of the largest hospitals in Italy with the excellent Department of Gastroenterological Pathology (CEMAD) - at the Policlinico Universitario Fondazione Agostino Gemelli, Rome, Italy!
I am always interested in professional development and opportunities to learn continually. This experience of side-by-side working with great professionals in gastroenterology and world-top scientists is priceless. Thanks to the UEG Clinical Visiting Fellowship, it became possible to improve knowledge in the best hospitals in Europe. I am very grateful to UEG for this unique chance. And I am extremely grateful to the supervisor of my Clinical Visiting Fellowship Dr. Gianluca Ianiro. Dr. Ianiro proposed a schedule for two fellowship weeks with departments and specialists with whom I worked on daily.
My fellowship began with a lecture about important things in treating inflammatory bowel diseases by prof. Cuckoo Choudhary (Thomas Jefferson University), invited to CEMAD for experience exchange between European and American gastro-schools. This lecture was my inspiration for active work. During these two weeks, I got master classes in gastrointestinal endoscopy, had experience in management of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, liver cirrhosis of various etiologies, inflammatory bowel diseases, and celiac disease, worked with specialists who treat non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and was present at the meeting of the liver transplantation committee, improved skills in GI ultrasound diagnostics and fibroscan. I observed patient management both at the outpatient and inpatient stages. A personal discovery for me was the treatment of patients with intestinal microbiota disorders, visiting the microbiology laboratory, and learning about research providing by the team. I personally owe this to Dr. Gianluca Ianiro, who is a top expert in microbiota, and who interests and inspires doctors in the gut microbiota research.
The CEMAD team met me warmly and sincerely, always helped and clarified all points that interested me, explained clinical cases and peculiarities of each patient's management. It is incredible to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this hospital, to feel involved in such a wonderful team, whose main goal is to help the patient. For my professional development, I gained excellent practical skills, and also expanded my clinical vision of diagnosis and treatment of patients with GI disorders.
I am endlessly grateful to UEG, the CEMAD team and to my Clinical Visiting Fellowship supervisor Dr. Gianluca Ianiro for an incredible clinical stay in Rome!
