What to expect?

This intensive training programme is highly interactive for both faculty and participants, maximising learning outcomes and expanding participants’ knowledge using the latest training standards. With our perfect blend of online and on-site (face-to-face) education, clinicians currently specialising in the field of colorectal cancer will be given an ultra-modern learning, networking and developing experience featuring top faculty.

Learning objectives
  • To understand the basics of CRC: Pathogenesis and pathology 
  • To acquire up to date knowledge on management of polyps and early CRC: 
    • Screening strategies according to risk stratification 
    • Endoscopic detection, characterisation and reporting 
    • Therapeutic management of early CRC: From endoscopy to surgery 
  • To create a multidisciplinary mindset on CRC  
    • Staging  
    • Surgical management of the primary tumour 
    • Surgery/Ablation for colorectal liver metastases 
    • Neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapies  
    • Surveillance after surgery 
  • To understand how to manage patients with advanced CRC, including palliation and special groups 
    • Chemotherapy in metastatic CRC 
    • Other aspects of palliation: Pain management, nutrition, etc. 
    • Management of recurrence of colorectal cancer 
    • Management of frail and elderly patients 
Target audience
  • Clinicians (gastroenterologists, surgeons, radiologists, radiotherapists, endoscopists, paediatricians, GPs, oncologists) currently specialising a/o already experienced in the field of CRC 
  • Individuals with specific interest in GI oncology after finishing their training/fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology

Online phase: October 25 – November 22, 2022

The online phase will be spread out over the months of October & November 2022, with approximately 3 hours of mandatory weekly assignments. This personalised online learning experience will feature a varied mix of live and self-paced materials, including:

  • Assigned reading of clinical practice guidelines and Mistakes in… articles
  • Assigned viewing of previous UEG lectures: 
    • UEG Week recordings 
    • Postgraduate Teaching (PGT) Programme recordings 
  • Live interactive webinars: 
    • Pathogenesis of CRC, types of precursor lesions, diagnosis & staging of CRC and risk factors for CRC

The online phase is carefully aligned with the topics and cases being covered on-site to provide an integrated learning experience. Participants will have interactive discussion and exchange with their peers and tutors.

Face-to-face course: November 24 - 25, 2022

The culmination of this blended learning experience will be a two-day face-to-face event in Vienna, Austria, featuring: 

  • Multidisciplinary case-based learning in small groups
  • World-class faculty  
  • A mix of teaching formats, e.g., case studies, discussion, group work, quizzes, etc.  
  • Opportunities for networking with a multidisciplinary peer group and faculty 

The two days will be structured into sections covering the following topics of CRC:  

  1. Prevalence, high-risk vs low-risk populations and prevention  
  2. The endoscopists’ view: Endoscopic detection, diagnosis and resection techniques of polyps and early cancer  
  3. Multidisciplinary management for colorectal cancer based on real life clinical case scenarios 
  4. Decision making in specific populations, e.g., ageing and/or fragile patients. Palliative care for CRC. 

Participants will work on clinical case scenarios prepared by faculty members in each topic block.

Selection criteria

Participation in the Masterclass on CRC is by selection only. A maximum of 50 participants will be invited. The following criteria will be taken into account: 

  • myUEG Associate: To be eligible for application to the Masterclass, participants need to be registered as myUEG Associates.
  • You are a clinician currently specialising in a/o already experienced in the field of CRC (gastroenterologists, surgeons, radiologists, radiotherapists, endoscopists, paediatricians, GPs, oncologists) .
  • One-page CV (max.)  
  • List of (max) top 5 publications 
  • Letter of motivation (max. 250 words) answering the following 2 questions: 
    • What benefit do you expect to gain from this programme? 
    • Why should UEG select you for this programme? 
  • Diversity and inclusivity 
    • To achieve diversity within the course, regional, gender balance & specialties of applicants will be taken into consideration.  
    • In addition, preference is given to candidates from Europe and Mediterranean countries. 

 All applicants will be notified shortly after the review is completed. 

An adequate level of English is essential to be able to follow the content delivered and participate fully in the course.

Please note that no travel or accommodation reimbursement will be provided. Attendees are responsible for making their own travel arrangements.
